OMRA OTTAWA

Helping resettled refugees in Ottawa manage rental costs

About Us

OMRA is a small non-profit, volunteer-based charity which uses a grocery card fundraising program and tax-deductible donations to help newcomers get established. OMRA has been operating since 2001.

Our Mission

OMRA’s mission is to make it easier for resettled refugees to get affordable housing in Ottawa. To achieve this, OMRA provides rent subsidies to select refugee families and individuals. OMRA also advocates for better access to affordable housing in our city.

Rent Subsidies

OMRA provides rent subsidies to resettled refugees who have recently arrived in Canada. Subsidy recipients are identified through referrals by private sponsorship groups and by the Catholic Centre for Immigrants or other refugee settlement agencies.

What People Are Saying

I am grateful for the OMRA volunteers who had faith in me and helped me achieve my dreams”

“Since our arrival in Canada, we did not feel alienated because you were standing next to us with every step, and filling our lives with happiness, love and generosity”

“When we arrived in Canada, it was February, and the snow was so much.  When you come here for the first time, your psychological health becomes very bad given the fact that you have been through so much in your own country. So it was all black and dark. Once I got introduced to OMRA, I felt someone opening arms for a hug.

“I would have been working full-time, even more than that. Trapped in that cycle and wouldn’t have been able to study. Thus, OMRA’s support provided me with the time and opportunity to use my skills and benefit from my occupation that I acquired back home to find a better job in Canada.”

Evaluating the effectiveness of OMRA Rent Subsidies

The Catherine Donnelly Foundation provided OMRA with funding in 2023 to evaluate the cost and impact of OMRA’s time-limited rent subsidies and to determine how the subsidies could be expanded to serve other vulnerable communities in Ottawa. A team from the University of Ottawa found that OMRA is reaching its target population with a high degree of satisfaction, resulting in housing stability, improvements in education and employment status, and increased social connection. The full evaluation can be found here – OMRA Evaluation Report.
